33rd National Book Awards Finalists Announced (2014)

The finalists for the 33rd National Book Awards were announced by National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC). The winners will be announced in an awarding ceremony at the 35th Manila International Book Fair to be held at SMX Convention Center, Mall of Asia Complex in Pasay City. The bookfair is slated on September 17-21, 2014.

2014 FIBA World Cup schedule and score tally (Aug 30-Sept 14, 2014)

The 2014 FIBA Basketball World Cup is the 17th edition of the FIBA Basketball World Cup happening in Spain (Barcelona, Bilbao, Granada, Gran Canaria, Madrid, Sevilla) on August 30-September 14, 2014. The tournament was previously known as the FIBA World Championship. 

This will be the last time that this tournament is being held on a four-year cycle. The next FIBA World Cup will be held five years later, in 2019.

There are 24 teams from 213 federations taking part in this year's FIBA Basketball World Cup. The winner will automatically qualify for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

Misters of the Philippines 2014: 26 Official Candidates

The twenty-six (26) official candidates of Misters of the Philippines 2014 were formally presented in a Press Presentation held on August 28, 2014 at the Lancaster Hotel Manila, the official residence of the pageant. These gorgeous men representing areas from all across the country and from the international Filipino community are vying for four (4) major titles to compete in international pageants.

The candidates, who hail from different backgrounds—nurses, models, a teacher, even a side-car driver and a police officer—all came to compete in the most prestigious male pageant in the country today in hopes of bagging one of four titles at stake and bring honor to the country.

Daniel Kenji Matsunaga is Pinoy Big Brother All-In Grand Winner (Season 5)

Model-Actor Daniel Kenji Matsunaga is the Pinoy Big Brother (PBB) All-in Grand Winner revealed today, August 24, 2014, in PBB All-in Big Night held at the Resorts World Manila Theater in Pasay City.

The 18 Housemates were presented last April 27, 2014. Daniel was not part of the original 18 housemates, together with the elevator girl Cheridel Alejandrino, who were both added as house guests  after a few weeks of the show's running on TV. Daniel and Cheridel were both declared as official housemates after passing a series of tasks assigned by Kuya (Big Brother).

Ateneo's Kiefer Ravena soars high outlasting UE in overtime | UAAP77

Kiefer Isaac Ravena of Ateneo Blue Eagles performed big on August 10, 2014 (Sunday), intimidating the score of UE Red Warriors with almost continuous shoots at the overtime game to complete 93-91 win. 

A few seconds left at the 4th quarter, UE leads with 80 and Ateneo 78. But Ravena made a fast move making a 2 point shot at 0:23 seconds left, leaving both teams for overtime.

At overtime, Ravena scored another 7 out of 13 points made by his team.

10th Cinemalaya Film Festival: Full List of Winners (2014)

The 10th Cinemalaya Film Festival Awards Night was held on August 10, 2014 (Sunday) at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Manila.

Bwaya was cited “for its melding of documentary and fictional filmmaking, its effective depiction of a community’s efforts to come to grips with the horrible death of a young girl from a crocodile attack, and its powerful evocation of the marshes of Agusan in Mindanao, a vast wilderness where man and beast seek to maintain an ecology of cohabitation.”

Kasal, a slice of life drama of a gay couple, was cited for its “deeply sensitive and moving depiction of the intricacies of relationships.”
