The UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW) is now accepting submissions for the 9th issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature.

The Philippines' leading literary peer-reviewed journal, the Likhaan Journal is published annually with funding from the Office of the Chancellor of UP Diliman. It features the best of new and unpublished Philippine writing in English and Filipino. Submissions to the journal undergo a strict pre-screening and blind refereeing process by both the editors and a panel of referees composed of eminent writers and critics from within and outside UP.

A Forum on Contemporary Visual Surplus | September 13, 2014

DiscLab | Research and Criticism, in cooperation with Artery Art Space, is holding a public forum entitled AMALGAM: Unauthorized Introduction to Contemporary Visual Surplus to be held on September 13, 2014, 2:30-6:30 PM at Artery Art Space Cubao, Quezon City

The forum will bring together invited critics to confer about the nature of the film trailer as a visual surplus. Here, the inquiry extends from the rhetorical character of the trailer to its nature as a cinematic excess.

Ateneo Art Awards 2014 Winners in Visual Art & Art Criticism announced

Winners of the Ateneo Art Awards 2014: Fernando Zóbel Prizes for Visual Art and Purita Kalaw Ledesma Prize for Art Criticism were announced in a ceremony held at the Grand Atrium of the Shangri-La Plaza Mall in Mandaluyong City on August 14, 2014 (Thursday). The annual recognition was greeted by a lively crowd in support of all the artists and their shortlisted exhibitions, and the art critics who joined the writing competition.

Call for Applications: KRITIKA 2014 Fellowships

The Bienvenido N. Santos Creative Writing Center of De La Salle University-Manila is inviting young critics and scholars to apply for fellowship to KRITIKA 2014 National Workshop on Art and Cultural Criticism. In collaboration with the University of St. La Salle-Bacolod (USLS), this workshop will be held on April 20-26, 2014. Eminent critic and professor Rolando B. Tolentino is workshop director.
                                        
KRITIKA is envisioned to give young scholars who want to commit themselves to art criticism a forum where they could discuss their work and concerns with established art critics in the country. The workshop focuses on critical writing in the following arts: architecture, literature, theatre, film, dance, music, visual arts, and multi-art. For 2014, a fellowship will be given to food writing/criticism. 

Ten (10) applicants will be chosen for the fellowships, which include transportation stipend and free board and lodging at Balay Kalinungan, USLS-Bacolod.

Likhaan 7 Journal: Call for Submission

The UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW) is now accepting submissions for the seventh issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature, the Philippines' leading literary peer-reviewed journal.

31st National Book Awards Winners (2012)

The 31st National Book Awards (2012), organized by the National Book Development Board and the Manila Critics Circle, was held on November 17, 2012 at the Old Senate Session Hall of the National Museum. The event recognized the best books written, designed and published in the Philippines in 2011.

31st National Book Award: List of Finalists (2012)

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) and the Manila Critics Circle (MCC) announced the finalists to the 31st National Book Awards in twenty-three (23) categories. Best books published in 2011 were considered. No more than five titles per category were selected by the Pre-screening Committee to become finalists.

 

This year’s Board of Judges will be comprised of seventeen (17) NBDB-appointed experts and five (5) members of the Manila Critics’ Circle.

 

The publisher with the most finalists/winners is usually chosen as publisher of the year. Last year, the recipient of the Publisher of the Year Award was the UST Publishing House.

For published books in 2011, there are a total of 106 books in the eight categories of the Literary Division were considered for deliberation: 10 in Fiction (Novel), 21 in Short Fiction; 26 in Nonfiction Prose; 15 in Anthology; 6 in Literary Criticism/Literary History; 17 in Poetry; 7 in Graphic Literature and 4 in Ilocano. On the other hand, there are 76 titles in the six categories of the Non-Literary Division were considered for deliberation: 11 are in Art; 9 are in the Professions; 34 in Social Science; 4 in Science; 14 in Leisure; and 4 are electronic books. 

Rebisyon: A Colonial Literature Revaluation Conference for Teachers at CCP (August 23-25, 2012)

As a significant part of its annual convention, the Unyon ng mga Manunulat sa Pilipinas (UMPIL) will hold the Colonial Literature Revaluation Conference for Teachers entitled "Rebisyon: Muling Sipat at Suri sa Panitikang Kolonyal ng Filipinas" on 23-25 August 2012 at the Silangan Hall, of the Cultural Center of the Philippines in Pasay City. Guest of honor is National Artist for Literature Virgilio S. Almario.

On 23-24 August (Thurs-Fri), respected scholars will deliver papers on the colonial (Spanish period) literature like the pasyon, awit/korido (metrical romances), komedya, and the proto-novels (Urbana at Felisa, Tandang Bacio Macunat etc.). Each one is assigned a particular literary genre and is expected to give new insights on the subject. 

Fr. Jose Mario Francisco, S.J. (Ateneo de Manila University) tackles the pasyon, Dr. Nicanor Tiongson (UP Diliman) the komedya, Dr. Edgar Samar (AdMU) the korido “Ibong Adarna”, Prof. Louie Jon Sanchez (AdMU) the awit “Florante at Laura,” Dr. Jason P. Jacobo (AdMU) the epistolary “Urbana at Felisa” and Dr. Jerry C. Respeto (AdMU) the narrative “Tandang Bacio Macunat.” 

To further inspire the teachers explore methods of teaching these texts, veteran educators will demo-teach on the poetic and prose forms, namely Prof. Danilo Francisco M. Reyes (AdMU) and Prof. Ferdie Lopez (University of Santo Tomas).

The congress will be on August 25. Writers Chris Millado (drama), Carlos Piocos (poetry), and Eli Guieb (fiction) will be the resource persons for the Writers Forum called “Pakikipagtuos sa Halimaw: Ang Pagharap ng Manunulat sa mga Bagong Anyo ng Kolonyalismo” (Facing the Monster: How Writers Deal With the New Forms of Colonization)

The event is made possible by the support of Cultural Center of the Philippines, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Department of Education (DepEd). UMPIL members, teachers, and other interested parties are encouraged to attend the conference as well as the convention.

UST calls for submission to the 4th J. Elizalde Navarro National Criticism Workshop

THE UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas is now accepting applications to the 2012 UST J. Elizalde Navarro National Workshop in Criticism on the Arts and Humanities to be held in Baguio City on May 27-June 2, 2012.

The workshop is organized by the Varsitarian, the 84-year-old official student publication of UST. It is held in honor of the late National Artist for the Visual Arts and art critic J. Elizalde Navarro, who was art editor and critic-poet of the Varsitarian during his student days, and in connection with the Neo-centennial celebration of UST, which was established in 1611 and which entered its new and fifth century last Jan. 28, 2012.

This year’s workshop is co-sponsored by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA).

Fellowship will be given to 12 promising young critics who would like to enhance their analytical, research, and writing skills.

Cinemalaya was founded in 2005 with clear objectives: 1) to help develop and support the production of cinematic works of Filipino independent filmmakers that boldly articulate and freely interpret the Filipino experience with fresh insight and artistic integrity; 2) to discover, encourage, support, train and recognize gifted Filipino independent filmmakers; 3) to promote Filipino independent films locally and internationally; and 4) to establish a network for exchange, communication, and cooperation among members of the independent film sector. The paper will assess the impact of Cinemalaya after 6 years and discuss how it should move forward to better serve Philippine independent cinema.
