It is a challenge to create unique content online. There are so many things that we can write about - from easy, interesting subjects to more complex issues about society and nation. Everyday is a learning process. We treat each subject differently as our understanding of things widens. As content creators, we need to make some serious efforts to offer something for our audience especially those that rely on us. We need to establish a reliable audience who can truly trust us and make us feel important and relevant. Research and resourcefulness and careful planning are needed to create interesting content. It is not easy though, but the rewards can be fruitful in the long run.

Miss Philippines Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach's victory being crowned Miss Universe 2015 was such an overwhelming and uplifiting spirit for the Philippines, and to all the Filipinos around the world, after a 42-year drought of the coveted title. If you know what Pia has gone through since she first competed in Binibining Pilipinas 2013 (Miss Philippines 2013) winning only as 1st runner-up and competing again in 2014 but did not win any title, you will understand more how her achievement means to her and to this nation.

The UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW) is now accepting submissions for the 9th issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature.

The Philippines' leading literary peer-reviewed journal, the Likhaan Journal is published annually with funding from the Office of the Chancellor of UP Diliman. It features the best of new and unpublished Philippine writing in English and Filipino. Submissions to the journal undergo a strict pre-screening and blind refereeing process by both the editors and a panel of referees composed of eminent writers and critics from within and outside UP.

LIKHAAN: The University of the Philippines Institute of Creative Writing (UP ICW) is now accepting applications for the 54th UP National Writers Workshop to be held in Baguio City in April 2015.

Call for Submission: 14th UST National Writers Workshop

Applications are open to both Thomasian and non-Thomasian writers. The twelve (12) applicants accepted will receive fellowships covering tuition and a modest honorarium. They will be expected to stay for the duration of the workshop, which will be held in Ridgewood Residence, Baguio City on May 18-24, 2014.

A manuscript must consist of either two short stories, two works of creative nonfiction, or four poems. Manuscripts should be submitted in hard copy and on CD, preferably in MS Word format, together with an updated resume, a recommendation letter from a literary mentor, a certification that the works are original, and two 2×2 ID pictures.

Likhaan 7 Journal: Call for Submission

The UP Institute of Creative Writing (ICW) is now accepting submissions for the seventh issue of Likhaan: The Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature, the Philippines' leading literary peer-reviewed journal.

Almario, former ICW director and former UP Vice-President for Public Affairs Cristina Pantoja Hidalgo, award-winning writer Pedro ‘Jun’ Cruz Reyes, Dr. Roland Tolentino, dean of the College of Mass Communication and UP University Professor Emeritus Dr. Gémino H. Abad.

Philippine PEN National Conference 2012

The Philippine Center of International PEN (Poets, Playwrights, Essayists, Novelists), on the occasion of its 55th year, will hold its annual literature conference on December 6-7, 2012 (Thursday-Friday) at the Silangan Hall of Cultural Center of the Philippines, Pasay City. This event is supported by the National Commission for Culture and the Arts.

The theme is “The Writer as Public Intellectual.” This gathering seeks to chart how writers can influence the body politic and the critical mass, and examine the challenges they face in their mission to become social agents. 

Madam Carmen Guerrero Nakpil will be the José Rizal Lecturer. The keynote address will be delivered by Luis Teodoro. Speakers and panelists include National  Artists F. Sionil José and Bienvenido Lumbera; distinguished writers Nicanor Tiongson, Antonio Enriquez, Elmer Ordoñez, Rony V. Diaz, Charlson Ong, Angela Stuart Santiago, Melba Maggay, Tito Valiente, Michael Tan, John Nery, Jojie Tigno, Soledad Reyes, Amadis Ma. Guerrero, Ma. Luisa Torres Reyes, among others.

Steve Jobs’ Commencement Speech to Standford University Graduates (2005)

Steve Jobs (February 24, 1955-October 5, 2011) was the co-founder and CEO of Apple and formerly Pixar Animation. He was born in San Francisco, California.

The video above shows his delivering the commencement speech to the graduates of Stanford University in 2005. It was very inspiring indeed how his life turned around to become one of the most successful people across the globe and whose invention made an impact to the world and influenced a great deal of people's imagination.

Marian book anthology calls for submission

This is a call for submissions of creative nonfiction for an anthology tentatively titled, PILGRIMAGE TO MARIAN SITES.  The book will be edited by Cecilia Manguerra Brainard and published in the Philippines by Anvil Publishing.  Contributors will receive copies of the book as compensation for the use of their work.

The manuscript should be approximately 1,500-2,000 words.  This should be emailed to palhbooks@gmail.com.

The book will collect true accounts of pilgrim’s visits to Marian sites. The anthology will be something like a “tour guide” to other devotees of Mary who are interested in visiting Marian sites.

The editor is looking for well-written religious essays about people’s experiences when they visited Marian sites, in particular sites where Mary has appeared or where miracles have occurred because of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Some of the questions that should be addressed are: Why did the person make the visit? Where is the Marian site located, some history of the site? What did the person do while at the Marian site? What did the person experience while there or after the visit? Did the person experience any emotional or physical healing? Did the person experience any psychological change as a result of the pilgrimage?

Some of the Marian sites are: Fatima, Lourdes, Medjugorje, Knock, Pontmain, Pellevoisin, Giertzwald, Beauraing, Banneux, Pais, Rome, La Sallete, Guadalupe, Syracuse, Vellankani (India), Montserrat, La Vang (Vietnam), Zaragoza, Ephesus, Loreto, Czestochawa, Philippine-sites, and many more.

The publisher is Philippine-based; contributors with a Filipino connection are preferred.

Deadline for submission is October 15, 2011.  Early submissions are welcome.  Please send your bio (approx. 150 words) in people-friendly narrative form.

CCP to launch "Ani 36" anthology (Disaster and Survival Issue)

The Literary Arts Division of the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) will launch Ani 36 on April 1, 2011, 7:00 p.m. at the CCP promenade. Ani is a publication that showcases the varied literary traditions in the country and the vibrant creative writing by Filipinos in other parts of the world. Ani 36, themed Disaster and Survival, has sections on prose, poems, children's literature, an essay on a CCP activity in response to a disaster in the regions, and art reviews.

Likhaan Journal 5: Call for Submission

For its fifth issue, Likhaan: the Journal of Contemporary Philippine Literature 5, will accept submissions in the following genres, in both English and Filipino:


• Short stories ranging from about 12 to 30 pages double-spaced, in 11-12 points Times Roman, New York, Palatino, Book Antique, Arial or some such standard font. (A suite of short prose pieces will be considered.)


• A suite of four to seven poems, out of which the editors might choose three to five. (Long poems will be considered in lieu of a suite.)


• Creative nonfiction (essays, memoirs, profiles, etc.), subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above).

• Critical/scholarly essays, subject to the same length limitations as short stories (see above)


• Excerpts from graphic novels, or full short graphic stories, for reproduction in black and white on no more than 10 printed pages, 6” x 9.” (Excerpts should be accompanied by a synopsis of the full narrative.)

ANI 36 Journal calls for submission

The Literary Arts Division of the Cultural Center of the Philippines is accepting contributions to its ANI 36 journal. The year’s volume focuses on the theme “Disaster and Survival.”

Works accepted are poems, short stories and essays in Filipino, English or any Philippine language with translation (or gist for prose) in Filipino or English.

SPINDLE is a non-profit online journal that publishes poetry, prose, artwork, and essays. Reviews and interviews on literary and visual art, long poems, collaborations, sequential art, and works from a series are also welcome.
