PETA relives the film "Bona" onstage (August 24 - September 23, 2012)

Philippine Educational Theater Association (PETA) relives the original film Bona as the group opens its 45th theater season this August in retrospect of a film classic that once captivated the hearts of Filipino audiences. From Lino Brocka's film masterpiece, this modern stage adaptation is directed by theater stalwart Soxie Topacio.

Originally directed by National Artist for Film and one of PETA’s founding members Lino Brocka, the film Bona is about a young schoolgirl played by Nora Aunor who became a die-hard fan of Gardo, a wannabe actor essayed by Philip Salvador.

Set in contemporary Manila, PETA’s stage adaptation evolves around Eugene Domingo in the title role, a spinster call center agent who becomes a fan of Gino Sanchez, essayed by Edgar Allan Guzman as a contestant in the talent search Star of Tomorrow. Blinded by her obsession on Gino, Bona turns her back on everything she values and gives up nearly everything she has. Caught in a quicksand of worship and pity, Bona proves how obsession may overpower love and even lead to a person’s demise.

NBDB calls for applications for book grants

The National Book Development Board (NBDB) is calling upon authors with manuscripts for books to apply for the National Book Development Trust Fund Grant for 2013. The chosen manuscripts will receive a grant of P200,000.00 each.

Manuscript/s for books should be on any of the following:

1.      Habitat rehabilitation and social impacts;
2.      A novel or book-length literary work originally written in Cebuano; or
3.      Documentation / codification of any traditional knowledge.

Word Analysis: Guni-Guni vs. Guniguni

"Guni-guni" should not be spelled with a hyphen in the middle. It should only be: GUNIGUNI.

In English, GUNIGUNI means presentiment, apprehension, figment of the imagination, fancy/something imagined, hallucination, illusion, mistaken perception, imagery, phantasm, phantom.

We only put a hyphen to a word being repeated (inuulit na salita) if the word can stand on its own. For ex:
gabi-gabi, araw-araw, buwan-buwan, taon-taon. So if we spell GUNIGUNI with a hyphen, then GUNI should have its own meaning.

To the new film of Lovi Poe, they should change their posters. I saw 2 kinds of spelling in their posters: (1) Guni-Guni; (2) Guni Guni. Both are incorrect.

SONG: "Kulang Ako Kung Wala Ka" by Erik Santos

I have probably heard of this song sometime over the radio, but I have not paid attention to it or even bothered to research about it. I know that when Erik Santos sings, it's always one of the best. I never knew that this song was already played in 2011. This song was played as a background music in a documentary show of ABS-CBN on Wednesday evening and I was keen to listen to its melody and the chorus. From there I got the title and made a little research on Youtube.

"Kulang Ako Kung Wala Ka" by Erik Santos is such a beautiful Tagalog song, with soulful melodies and a message that is sad but touching, that the guy is not complete without his love. The song is composed by Soc Villanueva. In English, the title means "I'm not complete without you."

Please find the complete lyrics of the song below.

Rejected UPCAT Essay Questions: Can you answer these?

The much-awaited entrance exam of the University of the Philippines, known as UPCAT Exam, has finally ended. But it has stirred controversy because for the first time, an essay question was included. That is why creative Pinoys have created hilarious, funny and witty questions that probably were rejected in the process of creating the essay part of the exams.

The questions were followed through Twitter with hashtag #RejectedUPCATEssayQuestions. This list of 120 questions may be updated and revised, therefore questions that are not funny and witty enough will be removed.

Source came from this Tumblr account, but editing on grammar, spelling, word usage, sentence construction, and punctuation is mine (Vintersections).

Featuring heritage and eco-adventure tours from all over the Philippines, the 23rd PTM is the result of various familiarization and exploration trips that bring new tour products into the market every year.

The annual event is organized by the Philippine Tour Operators Association (PHILTOA), in cooperation with the Department of Tourism. With almost 250 exhibitors presenting their tour products through colorful pavilions and booths, the Sale ng Bayan will also launch “Philippine Island Fun Caravan Getaways”—joint group tours that cover various locations from all over the Philippines. These 4-day to 8-day tours pool local, balikbayan, and foreign tourists together to avail of special packages that would have otherwise cost a lot of money if done individually. Featured tours include the Batanes-Cagayan Northern-scape, Cordilleras Cultural Weekend Warrior Caravan, Central Visayas Backdoor tour, and the Tuna-T'Boli trail, among others.

“It has always been our goal to outdo ourselves every year,” says PHILTOA President Cesar Cruz, who is also the chairman of the upcoming PTM. “Innovation is key. We've been working closely with tour operators and government agencies alike to offer newer, better products yearly.”

Like most trade shows, the PTM will still feature classic destinations such as Bohol, Boracay, Cebu and Palawan. Also not to be missed are the individual tour packages that have anywhere from 70 to 80% discounted prices, such as “Kulinarya” (Binondo food trip for as low as P648), “Health and Wellness” (Tagaytay Wellness trip for as low as P2900), “Festivals” (Panagbenga trip for as low as P5500), and many more.

Aside from the endless array of tour products in the country's biggest gathering of tour operators, the PTM will also provide informative seminars for students dubbed as Byahe-info. Also scheduled is an Eco Chorale Competition, a Folk Dance Competition, and even a Tourism Quiz Bee—ensuring educational activities for everyone in attendance.

It's more fun in the Philippines!
