Tanghalang Pilipino's PAHIMAKAS SA ISANG AHENTE | September 26-October 19, 2014

The Cultural Center of the Philippines and Tanghalang Pilipino present PAHIMAKAS SA ISANG AHENTE by Arthur Miller on September 26-October 19, 2014 at Tanghalang Huseng Batute (Studio Theater). Translation to Filipino was written by National Artist for Theater and Literature Rolando Tinio.

In Miller's Death of a Salesman, we are ushered into a world where fate is given a name: capitalist materialism. Willy Loman's tragic downfall stems from his unwavering desire to achieve the American Dream. And 65 years later, the obsession with this fantasy still plagues our national ethos -- it could very well define the tragedy of the Filipino people.

September 30: International Translation Day

Info & photo provided by Allan Macatuno thru Facebook:

Why is International Translation Day held every year on September 30? This is the birthday of St. Jerome, a known Bible translator of his time. Some translators consider him as their patron saint. But others who see September 30 as a non-religious event still celebrate this day as a chance to highlight the importance of translation in a globalized world.

Ricepaper's RepresentASIANS calls for submission

From Asia Writes:

The Asian Canadian Arts and Culture community is a lively community made up of people who overcome and reconfigure binary concepts such as: east / west, insider / outsider, naval-gazing / public persona, global / local. By exploring both the familiar and the terra incognita within our shared landscape, artists and writers look at how members of the demographic have been, and continue to be, represented in books, on stage, and in the media. Given the relationship that has always existed between power and representation, it is not surprising that this theme continues to be a focus of contemporary critical thought.

Ricepaper accepts writing in the following genres and formats:

* Literary and creative writing: previously unpublished short fiction, poetry, play excerpts, and works of translation;
* Features: (2,000 to 2,500 words) in-depth articles and interviews offering original analysis, investigation and exploration into important socio-cultural trends affecting the Asian Canadian and broader public (features address
the proposed “theme”);

Published by the Asian Canadian Writer’s Workshop, Ricepaper is a national literary arts magazine committed to providing voice and venue to a vibrant and evolving Asian Canadian identity and culture. A forum for inclusive, representative and progressive dialogue, Ricepaper showcases the quality work by artists, scholars, and cultural producers that reflects the diverse interests of Asian Canadians. Please include a short biographical note (50 to 75 words) with writing and publishing credits and/or resume with your submission.

Early submissions are highly encouraged. All first drafts for Issue 15.2, (REPRESENTASIANS) are due no later than March 1, 2010. Send to: editor@ricepapermagazine.ca (c/o Eury Chang).
