In the United States, if you are arrested for drunk driving or commonly known as DUI (Driving Under the Influence), there will be heavy consequences that will cost you a lot of money in order to get your driving privileges back. Not only convicted drunk drivers have to appear in court, paying of fines, having their driving license suspended, they will also have to bear the cost of going to DUI School. They are also required to be evaluated and treated for a drinking problem and paying higher insurance premiums. In many states, they are also required to install an interlock device on their vehicle.

CHAROT! at PETA Theater Center | February 8-March 17, 2019

Filipinos have a knack for comedy. We joke about our struggles and laugh about difficult situations as a way to get by them. But when things become too absurd, where do we draw the line between what is still funny and what is no longer a laughing matter?

“Charot,” a Filipino colloquial term that means “just kidding,” underlines a pun. It is used to downplay an otherwise scathing statement to mere jest. A safe word, it turns its argument on its head, watering it down to avoid the ire of the message’s receiver.

PETA Theater Actors invite you to watch CHAROT!

As things become more and more ridiculous in our society, Filipinos do not choose to remain silent. Unfortunately, many opt for something worse: laughter. We laugh in the sidelines as someone drives the country to debt, discord, and chaos. We laugh to escape and to convince ourselves that this joke, too, shall pass. But what if you are brought to the front and center? What if you have the power to make the laughter stop? Set in 2020 Philippines, PETA’s 51st Theater Season ender is a comedy play with songs aptly entitled Charot! It engages audiences by taking into account an important choice they will make during the play, that will decide how our story unravels.

In a place where a leader showers kisses and calls first dibs on women, where God is painted stupid, and where “knock knock, who’s there” is answered by a gunshot to the head – everything is a joke. But PETA’s Charot! is all imaginary… right? And it has a hilarious punchline: Under a new charter, the Philippines will be united under the banner of federalism… Charot!

CJ Navato for CHAROT! | PETA Theater

PETA’s Charot! provides a platform for discussion regarding the fine print of the proposed Charter Change: the amendments on the freedoms of expression, ownership, and most especially, federalism. What is it and what will it borne in the given context of Filipinos? As a response to the call for unity by breaking the walls between generations and social classes, PETA’s Charot! will constantly break the fourth wall to engage audiences in a dialogue, in an aim to rid of what divides us beyond the stage, such political biases, poverty, conflicting worldviews, and more.

PETA’s 51st Theater Season ender introduces a dynamic cast of newcomers and veterans: Jack Yabut as Papsy, Teetin Villanueva and Gardo Vicente as Millennial Girl, Bene Manaois and ABS-CBN Star Magic’s CJ Navato as Millennial Boy, Meann Espinosa as Tita Mary Grace, Sister Joy, and Karen De Villa, Kitsi Pagaspas as Nanay, Jason Barcial and Gie Onida as Boss, Gio Gahol and Lemuel Silvestre as Beki Grab Driver, Gold Villar-Lim and Jimma Nariz as Grethel Tuba, Icee Po and Rhapsody Garza as Mall Saleslady, and Norbs Portales as Street Vendor.

Similarly, the artistic team includes up and coming talents as well as seasoned ones: J-mee Katanyag and Michelle Ngu (playwrights), Maribel Legarda (director), Vince Lim (musical director), Jeff Hernandez (additional songs), Ian Segarra (choreographer), Boni Juan (set designer), Julio Garcia (set supervisor), Gio Gahol (costume stylist), Denise Nayve (associate costume stylist), Gerhard Daco (technical director), Jonjon Villareal (lights designer), and Ellen Ramos (video and animation).

PETA’s Charot! will make audiences laugh. It will inform them of what the joke’s all about, and then will make them think: Is it really funny? Is this still imaginary? Who’s really laughing now? This is our rehearsal for democracy, or the lack thereof… Charot!

PETA's CHAROT! Teaser

Lecture: "Historiography of a 'Lost' Cinema" by Nick Deocampo | November 24, 2016

CMC Research Brownbag presents Nick Deocampo's lecture, "Historiography of a 'Lost' Cinema: Issues to Consider" on November 24, 2016 (2-4pm) at Videotheque, UP Film Institute.

“How does one write the history of a ‘lost’ cinema?” The problematic surrounding Cebu’s “lost” cinema provides a daunting task for film historians desiring to write about a cinema whose films are lost, its filmmakers are gone and there is no reliable archive to consult about its past. Even the scant historiography available is uneven and in need of scrupulous scrutiny and validation. Considering the difficulties faced in historicizing Cebu’s “lost” film heritage, this talk will discuss key issues to consider in constructing the historiography of a cinema burdened with “absence” and “loss.”

Abusive son ruins Thanksgiving celebration

An abusive son went amok in front of his family at the dinner table during their Thanksgiving celebration recently. He felt embarrassed for the kind of prayer his father did and he did not want to cooperate to say grace and the things he must be thankful for. I think it's just about deep-seated pride that eats us up whole. This guy seems to do things without giving much thought of the consequences of his actions.

Importance of Innovation in the Criminal Justice Field

Changing Times Should Bring Change to Criminal Justice Practices

Because things change, the increasing importance of innovation in the criminal justice field weighs heavily on a society. New information, technology and ways of viewing things in general, means that people must start to look at new ways of dealing with criminal justice and the many institutions that practice it.

Figuring out just where to start with change requires ideas and innovative thinking. Many people express dissatisfaction with some of the old and more archaic ways of dealing with crime. In some cases these old methods are inefficient; in other cases they just no longer work. However, adding innovation to the criminal justice system must come as a multipronged solution. Improving on the laws and judicial system must also come along with improving how criminals are apprehended and prosecuted. That’s just one example of how each part of the criminal justice system can tie into each other. Rehabilitation also plays a large part, as recidivism is a major issue that keeps some people in the criminal justice system.

Below is the message of Br. Ricky Laguda FSC regarding the incident that happened last August 31, 2013 when Ateneo Coach Bo Perasol was teased by Jonathan "JJ" Atayde, a Lasallian alumnus saying thank you to him that DLSU won. It happened right after the DLSU vs. ADMU Men's Basketball Game where DLSU won (66-64).

According to @UAAPSportsTV Twitter post: "ADMU coach Bo Perasol slapped a 1-game suspension. DLSU supporter JJ Atayde banned for the rest of the season."

Letter of Apology from Jonathan "JJ" Atayde, a Lasallian alumnus

The victory of De La Salle University (DLSU) in the Men's Basketball Game last August 31, 2013 against Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) has stirred a tension at the Smart Araneta Coliseum right after the game has ended. Jonathan "JJ" Atayde, a Lasallian, taunted Ateneo coach Bo Perasol for losing in the game. This has caused the coach to get angry at Atayde that surprised all the La Salle and Ateneo fans.

Below is a screenshot of an Instagram video post of Joanna Robles.

In the last quarter of the game, Jeron Teng of DLSU took his winning shot at the last 1:09 second. DLSU (66) won over ADMU (64).

MMFF 2010, 2011 & Beyond: 10 Points

The Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) has been one of the most controversial film events in the Philippines every year. Here is my forecast of the films that may compete in the 2012 MMFF.

You may also check out the following as references:

Petition needed for the Director's Cut of Tikoy Aguiluz's film, "Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story"

* click the image for larger view *

Director Amable “Tikoy” Aguiluz was surprised to know that there were scenes added to his film without his consent and knowledge. His new film, Manila Kingpin: The Asiong Salonga Story is an official entry to the 37th Metro Manila Film Festival (2011).

Direk Tikoy Aguiluz
Aguiluz requested that his name be removed from all the advertising materials of the film such as posters, billboards and other online promotions. Since there were additional scenes, he doesn’t anymore consider it his work. Therefore he demands that he be allowed to make a Director’s Cut of the film to be shown during the film fest and which he can submit to international film festivals.
