Electrolux Design Lab 2011 calls for appliance designs

The Electrolux Design Lab 2011 invites undergraduate and graduate industrial design students worldwide to create new, revolutionary home appliances for a chance to win cash prizes and a six-month design internship. This is a good opportunity for those who have been working on their designs but don't know where to submit, and also those who want to have a career in product design.

Now on its 9th year, “Intelligent Mobility” is the theme of this year's Electrolux Design Lab competition. Intelligent Mobility underlies three concepts and trends of modern technology: (1) sensitive in meeting the needs of consumers; (2) flexible in adapting to the diverse activities of people, and (3) empowering in giving the consumers the control to operate home systems while at home or away.

The main challenge is for participants to be bold, creative and innovative in coming up with their designs that will redefine how people prepare, store food and do their dishes, both within and beyond the home.  It should offer personalization by customizing features that fit the needs of customers while utilizing existing technology as support and guidance.

The entries shall be judged based on (1) intuitive design, (2) innovation and (3) consumer insight. Also, in keeping with the Electrolux heritage, entries must be reflective of the values of Scandinavian design − being environmentally responsible, user friendly and visually appealing.

Cash prizes and a once in a lifetime opportunity await the winners:
  • First prize of 5000€ (which is more than PhP 350,000) and a paid six-month internship at one of Electrolux Group’s design centers.
  • Second prize is 3000€ (more than PhP 200,000).
  • Third place will get 2000€ (more than PhP 140,000).

Deadline of entries will be on May 11, 2011. For more details about the competition, visit the official website While for hints, tips and design developments, like and be a member of the Electrolux Design Lab page on Facebook.
