NCCA celebrates ingenuity and advocates inclusivity for NAM 2024

In honoring the artistic excellence and acclaiming the uniqueness and diversity of Filipino heritage and culture, the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA), led by its chairman Victorino Mapa Manalo, executive director Oscar G. Casaysay, and deputy executive directors Marichu Tellano and Bernan Joseph Corpuz, will spearhead the celebration of National Arts Month (NAM) 2024 this February by virtue of Presidential Proclamation No. 683 issued in 1991.

Bannering the theme “Ani ng Sining, Bayang Malikhain,” NAM 2024 aims to outline the notion that the bountiful harvest of a Filipino creative nation is derived from collective human imagination, not just individual aspirations. Bayang Malikhain signifies a Filipino society that places a high value on imagination, innovation, and artistic expression as integral components of our identity and progress. In Bayang Malikhain, artistic pursuits are honored as vital contributions to the nation's development and cultural richness.

Eugene Domingo takes on a powerful role in Jun Lana's "Barber's Tales"

After the critically-acclaimed film Bwakaw comes another powerful suspense drama, Barber's Tales written and directed by Jun Robles LanaBarber’s Tales is a period drama, structurally a narrative made up of tales from the barbershop, vignettes about Filipino rural life held together by themes that have personal resonance, including sexuality, identity and self-liberation.

Barber's Tales is an old screenplay that Direk Jun had been developing when it won in a national screenwriting competition in 1997. Unlike Bwakaw, which is a very personal and intimate story of an old man, Barber's Tales covers the tumultuous years of the Marcos dictatorship.

The film is structurally a narrative made up of tales from the barbershop (popularly known as "kuwentong barbero" - stories being told and passed on in a barbershop), vignettes about Filipino rural life held together by themes that have personal resonance, including sexuality, identity and self-liberation.

Dulaang UP's "Adarna" at Wilfrido Ma. Guerrero Theater | July 17-August 1, 2013

Adarna, the well-known and much-loved Filipino folk tale, opens another year of exciting plays from Dulaang UP which is now on its 38th theater season. Adarna tells the story of Don Juan, the youngest of three princes who went on a journey to find the elusive mystical bird called Ibong Adarna believed to be the cure for their ailing father, the king of Berbanya. Don Juan’s quest whisks him to adventures in different lands, encounters with sage men and beautiful princesses and challenges that will test the young prince’s courage and mettle.

Director José Estrella (Umaaraw, Umuulan Kinakasal ang Tikbalang) and her artistic team breathe new life into this dearly loved story of adventure, magic, courage, and love cherished by generations upon generations of Filipinos. This reimagining of this oft-told tale through a multimedia theatrical presentation blurs the distinctions between family dispute and love, home and faraway lands, and magical dreams and grim realities.
