Shell and Top Gear search for the Philippines' Smartest Driver

Inflation rates of fuel have always been inevitable. It is difficult for people who always on a tight budget. That is why some who have cars prefer to just commute than bring their own car because of maintainance reasons, terrible traffic, parking problems and of course, the high rise of fuel rates. But there are other simple ways for us to save on fuel, besides not driving.

It is important to note that one of the easy fuel saving tips is reducing your speed, especially when you don't need to be in haste. Fuel consumption rises when speed increases. Having some speed limit doesn't show you are a slow driver. Air filter must be checked regularly. When it is dirty, the flow of air that comes from the engine is getting restricted, which obviously hampers the car performance and also emits black smoke onto the air and can therefore affect our health. Tire pressure also must not be neglected. Under-inflated tires will have more rolling resistance and herefore you will need to burn more gas just to keep your car moving.

Pilipinas Shell has launched its search for the country's smartest drivers by sharing your fuel saving tips.  Those who will qualify as the smartest drivers will join Team Philippines in the first-ever Shell Eco-Marathon Asia. A valid driver's license is a prerequisite to join this contest. All you have to do is shoot a video covering how your techniques in driving minimize your fuel consumption, and close it by completing the catch phrase: "Ang Pinoy na matipid sa gasolina, ______________." Isn't that easy and fun? Log onto www.topgear.com.ph/shellsmartestdrivers and upload your video on fuel saving. Style and execution is at your own discretion. This contest is open between May 20 and June 20, 2010 only.

All participants will get a premium item from Shell. Ten (10) finalists will be awarded P10,000 worth of Shell fuel vouchers and will be invited to a fuel economy boot camp on June 26, 2010. They will undergo a driving challenge and the top two (2) finalists to emerge as the most fuel efficient will be hailed as the Philippines' Smartest Drivers. Does it sound awesome?

The two (2) winners will join Team Philippines from Mapua Institute of Technology, Don Bosco Technological College and the University of Sto. Tomas in the first-ever Shell Eco-Marathon Asia to be held in Malaysia on July 8-11, 2010. Our representatives will compete with other drivers all over Asia to set their record-breaking fuel efficient driving. Since this will be the first of its kind, the grand winner will get to bring home a fuel efficient car!

This initiative was made possible for all drivers to share to the whole world the different ways to save on fuel. Not only will you win fantastic prizes but also help other drivers to be more economical and at the same time help the environment.
