I'm One of the Finalists in the Samsung Photo Contest: Please Vote for Me and Win a Samsung E250 cellphone!

Do you want to win this Samsung E250 cellphone (above) in no sweat? Read on...

I joined the Samsung Photo Contest last November 19, 2008. The result of the finalists in all eight (8) categories is already out. The categories are: People, Techie, Sports, Environment, Fashion, City Life, Artsy and Food.

I entered my photo under Food category entitled, "WITHIN GLASS." If you want to win a Samsung E250 cellphone, please vote for me (for the most INNOV8IVE Photo in my category) by going to the Samsung website:  http://www.samsunginnov8.com.ph/finalists.php#

This is the INNOV8IVE description that I submitted with my photo:

"This photo entitled, \"Within Glass\" is a true testament of what innovation is. I tried to capture only the color of the drink. The color green emanates from the glass - a spirit that resonates from within. The color embraces passion & delight as it entices the thirst of the body, while lying down on this bench near the sea, listening to the sound of the waves. The wind then embraces the drinker as his/her thirst is being quenched."

Click on my photo and then enter your valid email address. Isn't that easy? I would appreciate all the help that you can extend for me by telling your friends, classmates, family and relatives to vote for me.

Voting ends on December 31, 2008. Thank you.

Bubble Gang's "Ang Spoiled" Storylines, Very Disturbing

I've been a fan of Bubble Gang ever since it started in the 90's. Friday is not complete without watching the show on GMA-7. And now, I would always look forward to its "Ang Spoiled" portion where Michael V portrays the role of a yaya and Ogie Alcacid as the spoiled brat kid because of its whimsical take on the nanny-kid relationship/encounters.

What has alarmed me the most was this particular video (linked) shown on November 21, 2008. Why would they show it in this manner wherein the kid exhibits an attitude of disrespect to her yaya by concealing what's behind her skirt and even crazily and forcibly taking her clothes off publicly in a store (The "Umaalembong" scene). I thought there is an MTRCB that really screens each and every episode that comes out on TV? And in the first place, as the creative director of Bubble Gang, Michael V. must really examine the storylines that they conceptualize for the "Ang Spoiled" portion. The kind of stories that they portray here is very crucial for kids. They will misinterpret it for sure. Viewers like me will not even find it humorous anymore but disgusting and disappointing. Judge it yourself.

If this has "passed" the supposedly meticulous screening of the MTRCB, it is not surprising that the "Ang Spoiled" portions that were shown before and in the weeks that followed were also aired on TV. These are the following:

GMA-7 and Bubble Gang must study their stories very well. A gag show like Bubble Gang intends to make people laugh, not to inflict harm on the value system of our children. Kids imitate what they see. They are also very visual. So we have to be careful in what we feed their eyes on. Parents must guide their children, not only in watching gag shows like Bubble Gang, but in every show that their very young kids are watching on TV. Parents must be there to also explain when the need arises.

Pocketful of Kids Toy Village Media Launch (23 Oct 2008)

I was fortunate to have been invited to the media launch of Pocketful of Kids on October 23, 2008. It is a venue where children can play and learn at the same time, maximizing their various intelligences at full potential. Rare educational toys are also on display where parents can check on toys suitable for their children's needs and skills.

Pocketful of Kids is the very first interactive toy village in the country that carries popular American and European toy brands that encourage children to wonder, discover, and learn through play.

Please  check out the photo album of this event here.

For press release:

How Play Affects Your Child’s Future

If you think plenty of prenatal exposure to classical music is enough to produce little Einsteins, think again.

Based on scientific research, 75% of a child’s brain development occurs after birth, which means parents can’t rely on Mozart and Chopin so much.

In fact, according to Sadika Akhter, anthropologist and researcher at Plan International, a child-centered international organization, the primary way for a child to develop fully is through play. “During playtime, children can learn and practice social skills, not to mention develop motor dexterity like grip and muscle control.  Cognitive abilities like problem solving and language skills are also enhanced.”

For example, when children play with blocks, they try to reach for the blocks, pick it up, stack or fit them together.  When they do this, they get to exercise the strength of their fingers and hands and also increase their eye-hand coordination.  This develops the child’s precision, a skill they would need to excel in areas like engineering and medicine.  Other toys like the colorful wire bead mazes enable creativity as they discover different color combinations they can do with the beads—a skill they can use to their advantage if they plan to take design or fine arts.

“Play helps develop our children socially, physically, intellectually, and creatively.  For example, a child can hone his or her concentration and attentiveness to know and remember the sequence of a certain game,” explains Natalie Tanchip, owner and founder of Pocketful of Kids, the very first toy village in the country.

Pocketful of Kids is the realization of Tanchip’s dream of providing a fun learning experience for kids.  Tanchip conceptualized the toy village as a kids’ happy place where their motor and cognitive skills can be honed, as well as provide a place where they can sit down and play with one another.  And unlike other display-only toy stores, Pocketful of Kids allows children to try out and experience the featured toys from popular American and European brands.

Pocketful of Kids showcases brands like Melissa & Doug, the number one brand in wooden educational toys in the United States which carries everything from puzzles to play food.  They also have Learning Resources that offers educational toys as well as a wide range of teaching resources that aid parents and teachers in developing the cognitive and motor skills of children.

The toy village is also filled with novelty items such as Italian brand Tatiri toothbrushes with built in hourglasses as well as Swiss Educo wire and magnetic bead mazes and scientifically themed toys fromEducational Insights. Aside from these brands, Pocketful of Kids also features the bestselling brand Alex that enhance the imagination and creativity of older kids and teens in the field of arts, crafts and fashion.  It also has books and other services for kids like a health and food section and playground.  The toy village also extends its reach to parents and guardians through parenting seminars and workshops conducted by no less than child experts.

This is because if parents take active parts in their child’s play, they can observe and gear the child towards a more purposive kind of fun—the one that involves learning.  Toys evolve from being mere items of amusement to ones that anchor the opportunity for kids to further develop and nurture their innate skills and talents.

“I believe toys and playtime offer more than just entertainment.  Instead, they aid parents in ensuring that their kids grow up and realize their full potential,” ends Tanchip.

Jesus & Santa: Their Differences

[A little editing was done on this. I don't know who originally wrote this piece.]

With a few days before Christmas, REMEMBER:

Jesus is Better than Santa.

Santa lives at the North Pole.
JESUS is everywhere.

Santa rides in a sleigh.
JESUS rides on the wind and walks on the water.

Santa comes but once a year.
JESUS is an ever present help.

Santa fills your stockings with goodies.
JESUS supplies all your needs.

Santa comes down your chimney uninvited.
JESUS stands at your door and knocks...
and then enters your heart.

You have to stand in line to see Santa.
JESUS is as close as the mention of His name.

Santa lets you sit on his lap.
JESUS lets you rest in His arms.

Santa doesn't know your name, all he can say is "Hi
little boy or girl, What's your name?"
JESUS knew our name before we did.
Not only does He know our name, He knows our address too. He knows our history
and future and He even knows how many [strands of] hair are on our heads.

Santa has a belly like a bowl full of jelly.
JESUS has a heart full of love.

All Santa can offer is HO HO HO.
JESUS offers health, help and hope.

Santa says "You better not cry."
JESUS says "Cast all your cares on me for I care for you.

Santa's little helpers make toys.
JESUS makes new life, mends wounded hearts,
repairs broken homes and builds mansions.

Santa may make you chuckle but
JESUS gives you joy that is your strength.

While Santa puts gifts under your tree,
JESUS became our gift and died on the tree.
It's obvious there is really no comparison.

We need to remember WHO Christmas is all about.
We need to put Christ back in Christmas.

Jesus is still the reason for the season.

May the Lord Bless and Watch over you and
your loved ones this Christmas 2008 .
And may He prosper and bless the work of
your hands in the New Year 2009.

A HAPPY and HEALTHY Holidays to you & your family!

Tanghalang Pilipino & GMA-7 Artist Center present "Kutsilyo, Pamaypay at Yantok"

From Tanghalang Pilipino of CCP:

"KUTSILYO, PAMAYPAY AT YANTOK"

Tanghalang Pilipino in cooperation with the GMA 7 Artist Center is mounting a trilogy entitled, "Kutsilyo, Pamaypay at Yantok." First presented in 1984 at the University of the Philippines, Kutsilyo, Pamaypay at Yantok is composed of three episodes that probe deeper into the characters of Maria Clara, Salome and Sisa, and the men in their lives – Ibarra, Elias and Pedring, respectively. The three male characters are the roles that the late Marky Cielo dreamt of doing before his untimely death.

The first episode, "Ang Balutan ng Gamot at Pagkain," written by Nick Pichay parodies the usually dramatic characterization of Maria Clara and Ibarra. Tanghalang Pilipino Actors' Company (TP-AC) scholar Tara Cabaero plays Maria Clara opposite AC apprentice Jonathan
Tadioan as Ibarra. Marky Cielo was rehearsing this role before he passed away.

The second episode, "Kabanata X," written by Chris Millado is a tender scene between Elias and Salome to be played by Starstruck survivor Ryza Cenon opposite Mike Tan, another GMA 7 artist. Alternating with them are TP's Anna Deroca and Russell Legaspi.

"Ang Nazarena," the third and final episode, also written by Chris Millado, is a violent scene that dramatizes the physical and mental torture that Sisa suffers in the hands of her abusive husband and that leads to the complete loss of her sanity. TP scholar Kat Castillo and PHSA theater arts graduate Meile Romero alternate as Sisa while TP scholars Chrome Cosio and Riki Benedicto alternate as Elias.

Kutsilyo, Pamaypay at Yantok will be staged under the direction of Tess Jamias at the CCP Tanghalang Huseng Batute from January 13 to January 15, 2009 (Wednesday to Friday), with matinees at 3:00 PM and evening shows at 8:00PM. Please call Tanghalang Pilipino at 832-3661 or look for Paolo at 0920-9535381 for other information.

An excellent experiential learning material, this trilogy is recommended for high school students studying Noli Me Tangere and college student's taking up Rizal's life and works, theater arts, humanities, literature, history and other social science courses. These classic scene studies are also good for all theater enthusiasts.

Smart & Nokia: N96 Launch Party

I was surprised to receive an invitation from Smart thru text. This was the Launch Party of Smart & Nokia's N96 phone held at Silver City, Pasig City on October 27, 2008. Who would resist such an invitation eventhough the venue is too far from my area? I was not even familiar with the place. I would always get lost in places like this. But I was curious of what the event could offer me.

I invited my friend Richard so we tried to locate the party place. True enough, we found it. Smart & Nokia N96 Launch was the biggest party I attended, or so I thought. The party was overflowing with food served on a huge, circular aluminum tray by waiters - calamares, kebab barbecue, fish fillet, bread with ham & pineapple, and my favorite - baked tahong! There were also juices, softdrinks and Infinit' (the new soda with a twist of little alcohol made by Ginebra San Miguel) to quench our thirst.

This event also relaunched the Smart MyTV feature. The fashion show was a feast for the eyes. All ramp models flaunted their black suit as they displayed their N96 phones. Macky, a friend from church, was one of them. Some models also served as ushers & usherettes. Nokia & Smart gave out 50 phones - N96, N85 & N79 - through a raffle. The party was attended by approximately a thousand people and only 50 hopefuls were lucky to have brought home an N-series phone. The techno dance music & laser lights and everything in between was totally magnficent! The sad part is - there were not much giveaways. Nevertheless, I enjoyed the party. I hope that there's another party like this one next time.

EDUCATION FOR THE BLIND: BREAKING THROUGH OBSTACLES

The 7th National Teachers Congress on Visual Impairment

This year’s National Teachers Congress on Visual Impairment will be held at the APO View Hotel in Davao City on Dec. 4-7, 2008, with the theme: Facing the Challenges of Inclusive Education for Learners with Blindness and Visual Impairment. Educators, school administrators, parents of blind children, and interested parties from all over the country will gather in this event.

Speakers will highlight innovations or new strategies on teaching blind students. The Congress aims to improve the skills of regular and special education teachers for them to be able to mainstream blind students in regular classrooms. It also intends to identify strategies to overcome the challenges faced in providing quality education of blind children.

RBI and the Bureau of Elementary Education will recognize teachers who have demonstrated outstanding performance in their program for students who are blind. Loyalty awards will also be given to teachers who have been in service for more than 30 years.

The National Teachers Congress on Visual Impairment is held every two years. This is a joint project of Resources for the Blind, Inc. (RBI) and Christofel Blindenmission (CBM), and in coordination with the Department of Education.
