Likhaan 7 journal to be launched at the UP Writers Night | December 6, 2013

The 7th issue of Likhaan literary journal will be launched on December 6, 2013 at 7-8pm at Pulungang Claro M. Recto, Bulwagang Rizal (formerly Faculty Center), College of Arts and Letters, University of the Philippines Diliman. 

Exhibition: The Mabini Art Movement at CCP | November 28, 2013-February 23, 2014

The Cultural Center of the Philippines presents the first in-depth exhibition on "Mabini Art", a genre in Philippine painting that developed in the 1950’s. The Mabini Art Movement opens on November 28, 2013 (Thursday), 6 pm at the Bulwagang Juan Luna.

Identified with artists who set up shops at Mabini Street in Ermita, Manila, the label eventually acquired a derogatory meaning particularly for its highly commercial nature. The exhibit, curated by Dr. Pearl E. Tan, looks into its roots from the conservative school propagated by artists who were taught the academic style at the University of the Philippines School of Fine Arts. Her research identified three generations of artists who developed styles and modes of practice that make Mabini Art a distinct genre and movement in Philippine painting. 

Mister Venezuela is Mister International 2013; Mister Philippines is 4th runner-up

Mister Venezuela José Anmer Paredes won the Mister International 2013 title, besting other 37 candidates who competed at the Skenoo Hall, Gandaria City Mall in Jakarta, Indonesia on November 21, 2013. It was the 8th year that this pageant was held.

Tanghalang Pilipino's SAN ANDRES B (a Filipino opera) | November 29-December 7, 2013

In celebration of the 150^th birth anniversary of its National Hero, Andres Bonifacio on November 30, 2013, Tanghalang Pilipino in cooperation with the Cultural Center of the Philippines, National Commission for Culture and the Arts and National Historical Commission of the Philippines proudly present a New Filipino Opera in two acts entitled San Andres B., based on the libretto of National Artist for Literature, Virgilio Almario and set to music by leading Asian contemporary composer, Josefino Chino Toledo, and directed by Floy Quintos.

Miss Puerto Rico is Miss Grand International 2013; Miss Philippines is 3rd runner-up

Miss Puerto Rico Janelee Chaparro won the crown as the first Miss Grand International (2013), besting 74 other delegates who competed on November 19, 2013 at the Beauty Thunder Dome in Bangkok, Thailand.

Miss Philippines Annalie "Ali" Forbes won as third runner-up. Ali was a Binibining Pilipinas 2012 first runner-up and was chosen to represent the country in the first edition of Miss Grand International.

Mega Fashion Crew Season 3 Reloaded on ETC Channel

Mega Fashion Crew recently held a press launch to officially introduce season 3 of the most anticipated fashion reality television show in the Philippines. Co-presented by L’Oreal Paris, it's the first and only concept of its kind to hit local television screens.

Honda donates PhP 5 Million to victims of super typhoon “Yolanda”

The Honda Group of Companies in the Philippines would like to express its deepest sympathy to the flood victims of southwest monsoon rain caused by super typhoon “Yolanda” (international name Haiyan). Through its Corporate Social Responsibility arm, Honda Foundation, Inc., the local Honda subsidiaries will provide five (5) million Pesos to help assist in the relief and recovery efforts.

Free special screening of "Supremo" at the CCP | November 21, 2013

The Cultural Center of the Philippines invites you to the special screening of the film SUPREMO. It will be held on November 21, 2013 (Thursday) from 2-4pm at the Dream Theater. This screening is a part of the MAY PAG-ASA: Handog kay Andres Bonifacio Sesquicentennial Festival of the CCP.

SUPREMO is a feature film produced by its lead star Alfred Vargas, together with his brother Patrick Michael. The film recounts the life of Bonifacio before the founding of the Katipunan, his relationship with his wife Gregoria de Jesus, and the battle he was involved with. Directed by Richard Somes, it features Jiro Manio as Emilio Aguinaldo, Hermie Concepcion as Tandang Sora, Nica Nava as Gregoria de Jesus, Nicco Manalo as Emilio Jacinto, Alex Medina as Procopio Bonifacio, and Mon Confiado as Andres' best friend, Macario Sakay.

Miss Venezuela is Miss Universe 2013; Miss Philippines is 3rd runner-up

Out of 86 candidates around the world, Miss Venezuela Gabriella Isler was crowned as Miss Universe 2013 (62nd Edition) during the coronation night held in Crocus City Hall in Moscow, Russia on November 9, 2013 (Saturday). 

Miss Spain Patricia Yurena Rodriguez won as first runner-up.

Russia hosted the Miss Universe pageant for the very first time in the pageant's 62-year history.

Mel B (America's Got Talent) and Thomas Roberts (MSNBC Live) hosted the event.

Changing Times Should Bring Change to Criminal Justice Practices

Because things change, the increasing importance of innovation in the criminal justice field weighs heavily on a society. New information, technology and ways of viewing things in general, means that people must start to look at new ways of dealing with criminal justice and the many institutions that practice it.

Figuring out just where to start with change requires ideas and innovative thinking. Many people express dissatisfaction with some of the old and more archaic ways of dealing with crime. In some cases these old methods are inefficient; in other cases they just no longer work. However, adding innovation to the criminal justice system must come as a multipronged solution. Improving on the laws and judicial system must also come along with improving how criminals are apprehended and prosecuted. That’s just one example of how each part of the criminal justice system can tie into each other. Rehabilitation also plays a large part, as recidivism is a major issue that keeps some people in the criminal justice system.
