CCP's Art & Cultural Events for 2011


The Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) has lined-up new artistic and cultural events for 2011:


The 2011 PHILIPPINE INTERNATIONAL GUITAR FESTIVAL & COMPETITION was held on January 27-30 and features guitar workshops, master classes and concerts of outstanding local and foreign guitarists, guitar ensembles, orchestra and display of world class guitars. Presented in cooperation with The Guitar Friends, the First Philippine International Guitar Competition was held at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater), Little Theater  Lobby and the Museo ng Kalinangang Pilipino.


The annual PASINAYA (CCP OPEN HOUSE FESTIVAL), the one-day “See-all-you can, Pay what-you-can” multi-arts festival was held on February 6, Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. The festival showcased a street dance spectacle featuring the grand champion of the Sinulog Festival, excerpts of CCP theater, music and dance shows, and a grand finale of a thousand voices singing the choral version of Jose Rizal’s “Mi Ultimo Adios” accompanied by the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra and the UST Symphony Orchestra.  The festival also featured visual arts exhibits, activities for children and families, film screenings and arts and crafts fair. 

In cooperation with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the International Theater Institute (ITI)-Philippines, a festival of monologues and one person shows entitled MONODRAMA MANILA will be held from February 8-18 at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater) and Tanghalang Huseng Batute (Experimental Theater).  


Volkswagen Foundation prize “Star of Tomorrow” and Prix Montblanc 2006 awardee, Chinese violinist TIANWA YANG performs with the Philippine Philharmonic Orchestra on February 11 with Johannes Brahms’ Violin Concerto in D major, op. 77. The concert also includes  Ludwig Van Beethoven’s 5th Symphony and  George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess.  Maestro Olivier Ochanine conducts.


On February 12-13, the world acclaimed PHILIPPINE MADRIGAL SINGERS returns to the CCP stage with classical and contemporary repertoire at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo (Main Theater).


A DOUBLE A: DUO PIANO CONCERT featuring Berlin-based concert pianist and recording artist Abelardo Galang II and award-winning pianist and New York banking professional Jose Artemio Panganiban III return to the CCP stage on February 16 in a concert of works for two pianos by Brahms, Poulenc and Rachmaninoff at the Tanghalang Aurelio Tolentino (Little Theater).

DON QUIXOTE, Miguel de Cervantes’s tale of love, valor and unflinching idealism will be interpreted in ballet by Ballet Philippines and guest dancer Connor Walsh of the Houston Ballet, to be performed on February 17-20 at the CCP Main Theater. 

 
The hilariously hit musical is back! ZSAZSA ZATURNNAH ZE MUZIKAL…VACK WITH A VENGEANCE! is slated on February 18-20, February 25-27, March 4-6 and March 11-13 at the CCP Little Theater. The beloved parlorista superhero (ine) portrayed by Eula Valdes reprises her role as the stunning red-haired warrior who saves the world from a giant frog, zombies and power-tripping planet women.  Chris Millado directs with a new set design by Gino Gonzales.

Giuseppe Verdi’s monumental work “REQUIEM” will be the PPO’s main program on March 18.

On April 15, the PPO 28th season 2010-2011 finale features the 2010 Isidor Bajic International Piano Competition grand prize winner Thai pianist POOM PROMMACHART performing Rachmaninoff Concerto No. 3.


Artists, cultural workers, environmentalists join hands with millions all over the world to celebrate EARTH DAY on April 17, Sunday at the CCP Complex. 


In June, the 150th birth anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal will be celebrated in a production presented by CCP and the National Historical Commission of the Philippines. Likewise, the VIRGIN LABFEST, a festival of new plays (untried, untested, unpublished, unstaged) by emerging and well-known playwrights, directors and actors will also be shown at the Tanghalang Huseng Batute (Experimental Theater) from June 28-July 10.


From July 15-24, the finalists to the 7th CINEMALAYA INDEPENDENT FILM FESTIVAL AND COMPETITION will be shown in various CCP theaters and venues.  Top prizes at stake are films under the New Breed Full-Length Feature category, the Short Feature Competition category and the Directors’ Showcase.

In July, August and September, eminent pianist REYNALDO REYES will perform a Festival of Beethoven sonatas at the CCP.

For jazz enthusiasts, a JAZZ FESTIVAL will be held from August 23-26 at the CCP with leading local ensembles plus invited musicians from abroad.
