A Forum on Contemporary Visual Surplus | September 13, 2014

DiscLab | Research and Criticism, in cooperation with Artery Art Space, is holding a public forum entitled AMALGAM: Unauthorized Introduction to Contemporary Visual Surplus to be held on September 13, 2014, 2:30-6:30 PM at Artery Art Space Cubao, Quezon City

The forum will bring together invited critics to confer about the nature of the film trailer as a visual surplus. Here, the inquiry extends from the rhetorical character of the trailer to its nature as a cinematic excess.

Elaborating on this, the discussion will likewise touch on the presence of other forms of visual surplus, their production and consumption, particularly within different media networks, and their function in shaping the landscape of contemporary visual culture.

Prof. JPaul Manzanilla of Ateneo de Manila University and Mr. Christian Tablazon of the University of the Philippines Los Banos will present theoretical approaches to the study of the trailer as visual surplus.

Adrian Mendizabal of Cinephiles and IndioCine, King Catoy of Pinoy Media Center, Chantal Eco from Tudla Productions, and Chad de Guzman of UP Cineastes Studios will talk about their terms of engagement with forms of visual surplus within their respective media networks.
