2009 Maningning Poetry Awards & Concert

From the Facebook of Maningning Miclat:

Maningning Miclat Art Foundation, Inc. (MMAFI) will be holding a concert and trilingual poetry awards entitled:

MABUHAY! BANAUE AT ABELARDO
2009 MANINGNING POETRY AWARDS AND CONCERT

Thursday, September 24, 2009 at 7:00 pm
Abelardo Hall Auditorium, College of Music
University of the Philippines
Diliman, Quezon City

Featuring: Banaue Miclat & Mabuhay Singers

Soprano, all-around actress, dancer and performer Banaue Miclat will be coming from New York to join the eminent Mabuhay Singers in a concert that will showcase arias from operas and Broadway musicals, famous kundimans and best-loved Filipino songs. The two generations of musicians will meet in the concert that will also award the winners of the 2009 Maningning Miclat Poetry Awards in the Filipino, English and Chinese Divisions.

The Maningning Award, handed out yearly since 2003, honors China-born Maningning Miclat, a trilingual poet and writer, and a prize-winning visual artist, teacher and translator. She was the author of a trilingual book of poetry, Voice from the Underworld (Anvil Publishing, Inc., 2000), the first book of poetry in the world in Filipino, English and Chinese languages written solely by one author. The landmark book, which was chosen by the Manila Critics Circle as finalist in the 2000 National Book Awards, includes Maningning’s poems in Chinese. She was one of the world’s Top 39 women poets writing in Chinese. Some of the poems were anthologized in a book published in 1995 during the International Women’s Year held in Beijing. She also won the Grand Prize in the non-representational category of the Art Association of the Philippines Art Competition in 1992. She passed on in September 2000.

Maningning Miclat was co-author, if posthumously, of the book, Beyond the Great Wall: A Family Journal, winner in 2006 National Book Award for biography. The Manila Critics Circle citation reads: “From 1971 to 1986, the Miclat family lived in the People’s Republic of China and this gathering of essays from Mario, Alma, Banaue and the late Maningning Miclat flow together in a majestic yet personal recollection of a time and place between times and places. Beyond the Great Wall signifies the act of celebration through memory, and moving on through returning.” The book was launched in the Philippines and at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., Virginia Tech, Blacksburg, Virginia, and in New York.

A non-stock, non-profit organization, MMAFI seeks partnership with organizations, institutions, and companies in its activities. In 2003, 2005 and 2007, we held the Trilingual Poetry Awards. The Art (Painting) Award was handed out in 2004, 2006 and 2008.

The foundation is inviting individual donors to sponsor tickets for students’ poetry and literary organizations as well as for campus papers’ editorial board and staff. This will help young poets and writers who don’t have enough money to pay for tickets to watch and be part of the MMAFI program.

Some poets and writers have committed to sponsor 30 tickets for the poets of LIRA, Linangan sa Imahe, Retorika at Anyo. Novelist Charlson Ong is sponsoring 10 tickets ( he will in turn get 2 complimentary tickets for himself and his guest), Poets Joey Baquiran & Teo Antonio together will sponsor 10 tickets, and UP professors and poets Wendell Capili & Neil Garcia are sponsoring 10 tickets, too. All of them will get 1 complimentary ticket each.

The foundation will appreciate very much hearing from other donors who would like to share some amount for our young artists, poets and writers.

The foundation will be happy to hear from other orgs and campus papers’ young writers, poets and artists who would like to be sponsored and we will try our best to partner you with our donors. This way, these kind-hearted souls with big heart will not only support the Maningning Foundation but also spread their love amongst our young poets, artists and writers.

For ticket reservation (P500.00 ticket), please call 812-4885/6, or text/call 0918-905-7311. Email maningningfoundation@gmail.com or acmiclat2008@yahoo.com.
